Phnom Penh shopping featuring advice for purchasing clothes
A useful tip when buying clothes, anywhere. Because Size labels can be misleading, take a tape measure with you, just in case you cannot try the clothes on.
Moreover, how many of us have purchased clothes, and to our annoyance & disappointment, found that our over economical size will not fit into our newly purchased underwear. “The label said 5XL, but following a considerable, exhausting struggle with my new underpants, embarrassingly, found my voice had become several octaves higher, and removing them was more difficult than extracting a frozen pork sausage from its skin”
Size Matters!
I recently purchased two pairs of shorts, one marked 4XL and the other 5XL. However, my trusty tape measure indicated that they were in fact, the same size. A pair of sandals I was about to purchase, proved useless because the left and right were different sizes.
If you have underwear or tee shirts, for example, which fit you perfectly, make a note of their measurements and have that tape measure handy when you shop. Moreover, always try footwear on, both left and right.
However, as with so much in life, be wise before the event.

Quick heads-up: Discovering that your purchase is unfit for the purpose.
Those of us from many Western nations will be familiar with the Sale of Goods Act, as per the UK, and variants in other countries. Purchase something that proves to be unfit for the purpose, and take it back with the receipt for exchange or refund.
A rude awakening!
Another purchase, this time from a well-known retail outlet, where I purchased a pair of sandals which after wearing only once, fell apart. Naturally, I took them back, in under 6 days, but the shop manager was unwilling to offer an exchange or refund because the original sale was part of a promotion. I’m not sure whether that was made clear on the shelf, but the receipt I was handed with my change, certainly made mention of it, although I failed to notice it until returning to the shop with the rather useless footwear.
Forewarned is forearmed
The lesson to be learned, however, is to establish beyond doubt, before purchase, if the product is in a sale or discounted, etc., and, nonetheless, whether covered by some sort of warranty or guarantee. Obviously, important when purchasing something expensive like, for example, a freezer, microwave oven, TV, or camera.
Moreover, receipts are often printed on thermal imaging paper which may fade and quickly become unreadable. A simple remedy, use your smartphone to take a copy or get a proper photocopy. You will be asked for proof of purchase when returning “faulty” products.
Nonetheless, as I often say, be wise before the event.

Tuol Sangke Market, Phnom Penh
Streets 93 & 68 plus various adjoining streets & passageways.
Very close to the “Old Stadium” you will find this vibrant street market, with its many shops selling just about anything and everything, in a typically Khmer style. Maybe not too much English understood. Sometimes extremely busy with tuk tuks, motorbikes, and pedestrians jostling for position. However, well worth a visit if you are in this area, but it can get a little stifling in the hot season. Moreover, from traditional Khmer food stalls to engineering products and steel tubing. From hiring a generator, welding equipment, or purchasing hand tools. From fresh fish, meat, and an excellent selection of mouthwatering fruit and vegetables, it’s all here somewhere and makes for an interesting shopping experience.

Should you be looking for a cycle shop, Flying Bikes 2 on street 51/corner Str.200, might fill your requirements. They have a good selection of new models and spares plus safety helmets etc. and the man I spoke with, understood English.

A visit to Phnom Penh would be incomplete without visiting Central Market (Phsar Tom Thmei) with its unmistakable dome. Moreover, it offers a mix of a traditional market with modern-style shopping in the central area, under the dome. From fresh fish to fluorescent tubes, knickers to knick-knacks, kettles to cucumbers along with shops selling fresh vegetables, kitchenware, china/cutlery, clothing, jewelry, & electrical goods. Central Market area
Central Market occupies the square bordered on three sides by street 126, and to the east by street 53. You will find retailers offering a wide range of telephones and large home appliances, such as refrigerators and freezers. Moreover, you will discover a selection of gold shops and aircon suppliers, etc. punctuated by a mix of smaller retail outlets.
Well worth a visit for shopaholics, in this historic part of the city.

A short walk south of Central Market, you will find Sorya Center Point Mall on Str. 142 & 63. Opened in 2003. Recently refitted, this modern air-conditioned shopping center provides eating on many floors, with escalator access. Shops selling household electrical items including TVs. Plenty of clothes shops & restaurants. On the ground floor, a branch of Lucky Supermarket with a pharmacy. Upstairs, you will find the latest movies at Cineplex, along with an excellent view of the city. A welcome respite from the traffic & afternoon heat.

Don’t miss these two interesting markets
The Russian Market (Phsar Tuol Tom Poung) on street 450 between 145 & 163 & Phsar Orussey Market, sandwiched between streets 182-141-166 & 111 are very similar covered markets well worth a visit. They have the usual fruit & veg., clothing, bedding & curtains, dried fish & sausages.
Wanted, Dead or Alive
Dead pigs, live ducks & chickens sold by the kilo are featured at Orussey while The Russian Market is excellent for souvenirs, such as linen, paintings, and pottery.
Both feature many narrow passageways for you to investigate, providing an interesting experience, but it can get quite hot and easy to lose your sense of direction. Nonetheless, an excellent opportunity to exercise your “good-natured” bargaining skills, particularly in the Russian Market! However, keep a close eye on your bags, and needless to say, keep that smartphone out of sight.

Aeon Mall, 1 and 2, are very large, super modern western-style shopping centers, with the convenience of on-site parking. You’ll find just about everything you need under one roof, including a supermarket & food hall. No shortage of well-known retail outlets including Monument Books, Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, Blue Pumpkin, etc, plus a Cineplex for the latest films. Moreover, excellent entertainment areas for children (Outlets may differ between Malls). If you like shopping, Aeon Malls with helpful customer services & respectable restroom facilities, should not leave you disappointed. Note, Aeon 3 is now open and we will do an article as soon as we can.

If you are looking for Western groceries try Thai Huot. They opened in 1994 & have built a reputation for good service & variety of products. Frozen foods, dry goods, kitchenware & fresh fruit & vegetables, etc. I shop at their branch on Monivong, close to the rail station, since I live in that area, but there is a branch on 63/398 & another on street 592.

Large beer & spirits selection along with frozen food & dry goods with various Western favorites. Used Bookshops: D’s on Street 240 close to Norodom Blvd. have an excellent selection of novels in English, French & German, etc. I have found them friendly & helpful. They include in their stock various guidebooks. However, I was informed, on February 21, that unfortunately, they are no longer accepting books back for cash or part exchange.

IBC Books at 250 Monivong Blvd. close to the junction with Street 154, for office stationery of all kinds plus office machines. Non-fiction & children’s books & learning posters etc. Moreover, they have a selection of board games & puzzles. In their sports department, they have running shoes, footballs, badminton racquets, hula-hoops, exercise machines, and much, much more. Interesting shop, well worth a visit. I noticed too, upstairs, that they have a selection of English language novels.

Office Stationery of all kinds is available at Peace Book Center at 435 Monivong and branches around the city. I have purchased various items here from a vast array of calculators, pens, paper, clips, envelopes, folders & files, etc., etc. Well worth keeping in mind, particularly if you need to buy in larger quantities, such as for schools.

On my travels, I discovered Toto Recycle Shops. Not only “cycles”, of course, but a vast selection of used electrical goods, shoes, furniture, china/cutlery, ornaments & clothes. Maybe a few new items too. The left-hand image is at streets 47/80 & the one to the right is on National Highway 1, about 2 kilometers down from the Monivong Bridge. Looks interesting, go take a look & ask about trade-ins.

Just about everything to fit out a new house or renovate an old one. Moreover, plumbing, electrical, kitchen & toilet fittings, plus a selection of many other household items. Between streets 106/108 on the riverfront, you will find the Phnom Penh Night Market. Quite a lively place nowadays with many stalls selling a wide selection of Cambodian products & souvenirs. There is an excellent selection of clothes for all ages plus jewelry and watches etc. Often a backdrop of local music, and a selection of Khmer food stalls. I prefer to visit between 6 and 9pm

Convenience stores have become more convenient
Having lived in Thailand for more years than I care to remember, I often wondered why it was that businesses like 7/11 had no facilities for sitting down, either inside or outside, to consume the products just purchased. While customers can shop for quick snacks, and pay a wide variety of bills such as electricity, water, telephone & even airline tickets, they have nowhere to rest their weary bones.

Nowadays, a lot of my time is spent in Phnom Penh, where I’ve discovered an almost endless variety of minimarts, selling an excellent range of products 24/7 but with a major difference. Some provide seating inside where you can enjoy the air-conditioning or outside where you can simply watch the world go by. Some even have Wi-Fi facilities. You can purchase a sandwich, a bottle of water & catch up with your needs on the internet or even write a letter to your mother.
An Oasis for sure
Walking around the city can be hot and tiring, for me, due to advancing years I need to take a short break here & there, & minimarts are a real oasis to escape the merciless heat of the mid-day sun or torrential rain in the wet season. I am puzzled, however, as to why it is that Cambodia’s popular neighbor, is not providing these rather basic creature comforts.
